When the economy is in an up cycle, it seems that there is more work available than there is people to do it. Jobs are sometimes filled even before they are officially open. However, you are racking your brain and wondering, how can I find me a job in these hard times? Economic downturns are notorious for making unemployment numbers skyrocket and that is exactly what has happened in recent months. There are jobs out there, but they have become more difficult to get.

One of the biggest mistakes that job hunters make when applying for jobs in an economic crunch is having tunnel vision when it comes to their skills. Most people are trained in one field and when they get laid off, they continue to look for a comparable position. However, the most successful people aren’t saying I need to find me a job just like the one I left. They reinvent themselves. Be open to any opportunity that you see, even if it is outside your comfort zone. If you have the right qualities, a strong work ethic and a desire to learn, many companies will train you for the specific duties. Also, use this time to get a bit more schooling. This can facilitate a career change.

Another thing to try is putting a personal touch on things. Include a personal note at the bottom of your resume. Don’t resort to writing something like, “Can you find me a job?” Instead, comment on specific aspects of the company or just thank them for offering the opportunity. Also, when you go to hand in your resume, ask to deliver it personally to the person in charge of hiring. Look the person right in the eye and introduce yourself, give them a handshake and let them know you are looking forward to meeting with them. This can make a great impression and increase your chances of being asked back for an interview.

It’s no joke to find a job in a tough economy. For the best results, think outside the box. Don’t settle for the way things have always been done. Reinvent yourself. Don’t be afraid to apply for jobs that are outside your career field. Also, put a personal touch on your resume and try to meet the people who have the power to make decisions. A warm smile and firm handshake could make all the difference in the end.
